METEOR MUSIK - EON - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

What began as a series of recordings in the remote hills of the Belgian Ardennes in the spring of 2017 culminated in a full-length, immersive 360° film, which the trio realised with visual and motion design artist Jaak De Digitale. The film, starring Dirk Hendrikx as a tormented cosmonaut, was specifically designed for full-dome projection, accompanied by a live soundtrack. It premiered in 2019 at the Brussels Planetarium, where it was twice sold out. What you hear on this record are the original recordings that inspired the making of the film and live performance.

In order to create the sonic foundations that evolved to be EON, the trio rented a cabin in the woods to build a studio with a very hands-on approach, using old analogue synthesizers and a straight-to-tape recording method. The output is a lively studio performance with no overdubs or post production. A collection of tactile sound sculptures, fluctuating in a breathing and constantly evolving sonic universe of hiss and flutter.

While some parts are certainly improvised, complex and layered soundworlds like the track Exit (listen here) are built on mechanical sounds that seem to come from a broken vessel that slowly unfolds its inner workings through hissing drones and the melancholic floating tones of the EMS Synthi A. Likewise, the final apotheosis, Zeno’s Paradox where a monumental atmosphere is created with minimal, abrasive geometric sounds rubbing against each other in another galaxy, only to be shattered by a glowing glass melody that splits the black matter with its crystal-like sharpness. While the adapted live performance certainly captivated and provided the tension and scale for the film, these recordings are denser in sound, but at the same time more breathing, taking time to slowly work out their detailed structures.

SPECIAL COLLECTOR’S EDITION WITH ACRYLIC CAST EON FIGURINE.

As a little extra for the hunters and collectors out there, Meteor Musik member, fine artist and sculptor Tim Geelen modelled a detailed 29cm (11.4”) figure based on the original costume as seen in the film. He then made a mould and cast 10 pieces in durable acrylic resin. An absolutely unique and beautiful edition made with love.
